The OFFSN used a commercial wireless, mobile, robotic telecommunications system controlled from a remote site. The two physicians were blinded to each other's findings and agreement rates of the evaluations between the ONSN and the OFFSN were compared using kappa statistics. Agreement rates between two ONSNs using the same protocol with 39 patient encounters served as the reference standard. The dependability and timeliness of data transmission were also assessed.

It has been used in obstetrics for five decades with no proven harmful effects. In this issue of the Journal, two new studies address ultrasound safety. The methodology of how to visualize the screening planes was described in detail. We used two methods to image the fetal heart with live xPlane imaging: one uses the four-chamber view as the starting plane and the other uses the longitudinal view of fetal upper thorax as the starting plane.

Article by: Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine 2011

Background Fat transfer to healthy breasts, that is, in women with no history of breast disease, particularly breast cancer, is becoming increasingly popular. The main issue remains whether the transfer of fat cells to the native breast hampers breast imaging. This pilot study aimed to assess the effectiveness of radiographic evaluation after breast lipomodeling and to propose objective elements for the detection of mammographic signs, and for postoperative evaluation of breast density and Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (American College of Radiology) classification.

Objective  Appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency in pregnancy. Acute appendicitis is often difficult to diagnose clinically, and concerns regarding antenatal CT imaging limit its use resulting in high false negative rates at laparotomy. MRI has recently been reported as a reasonable alternative to CT imaging in cases of suspected appendicitis. Our objective was to perform a meta-analysis of recently published data regarding the utility of MR imaging in cases of antenatal suspected acute appendicitis.

Article by: Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine 2011

Introduction. Over the past two decades, an expanding body of research has examined women's and men's genital self‐image. Support for the reliability and validity of the 7‐item Female Genital Self‐Image Scale (FGSIS) has been found in a convenience sample of women.

Article by: The Journal of Sexual Medicine 2011

Historically, cervical cancer was the first malignancy for which disease staging was introduced. The current International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging system for cervical cancer recognises that in spite of the recent advances in imaging and assessment of tumour size, surgical staging remains more accurate than clinical staging, and considers cervical cancer to be primarily a local disease in the pelvis.1 FIGO staging is based on a non-surgical clinical examination with the addition of cytoscopy, urography, and a chest X-ray.

In the recent 2009 update of the FIGO staging for cervical cancer, while diagnostic imaging to assess primary tumour size was not made mandatory, it was encouraged. Especially in the early stages of cervical cancer, lymph node metastasis is an indicator of poor prognosis, with the status of the para-aortic lymph nodes being considered perhaps the most important prognostic factor.2 While lymph nodal assessment was also not included in the updated FIGO staging, the FIGO committee did also encourage the use of imaging techniques to evaluate lymph node status.

Article by: Excerpta Medica

According to the WHO, “The internationally agreed description of osteoporosis is that it is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, with a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture.”1 Although preventive therapies are available for osteoporosis, it is expected to increase in its worldwide prevalence, and social and economic burden, as populations continue to age. Clearly, optimization of the assessment of the disease, and improvement of the diagnostic techniques used to evaluate bone mineral density (BMD) and bone strength, are highly desirable.

In the assessment of osteoporosis, the most widely used technique is measurement of BMDa using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).2 In post-menopausal women and men over the age of 50 years, the WHO FRAX algorithm has been introduced to quantify the 10-year probability of a hip or major osteoporotic fracture, taking into account a number of factors including femoral neck BMD, gender, body mass index, prior fractures, and history of parental hip fractures.3

Article by: Excerpta Medica

Regular screening for breast cancer using mammography in women between the ages of 40 and 50 allows greater likelihood of conservative surgery for breast cancer, as opposed to mastectomy, according to new research presented at RSNA 2010 on Thursday, December 2nd.

“This work is quite a novel approach in that success of screening is usually measured in terms of reduction in mortality from breast cancer,” said Nicholas Perry, MD, of The London Breast Institute, London, UK. “We are not aware of any other studies in this age group comparing success in terms of breast preservation,” he added.

In their study, Dr. Perry and colleagues compared mastectomy rates following breast cancer diagnosis at a UK center in women aged 40-50 with a prior mammogram within the previous year to those with longer interval or no previous mammography.

Article by: Excerpta Medica

A new reporting system aimed at ensuring that unexpected radiologic findings are effectively communicated to referring clinicians is well received by most clinicians, according to a study presented on 30 November 2010 at the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago.

The new system, which has been developed and implemented by the radiology department at Darthmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, automatically alerts referring clinicians about unexpected findings (UFs), and the radiology department follows up with them. If a clinician does not respond to repeated notices, then a certified letter is mailed to the patient informing him or her of the UF.

Article by: Excerpta Medica
