RSNA 2011: Subjective experience may limit quality improvements with iterative reconstruction
Iterative reconstruction has been an important way to improve image quality while reducing radiation dose, but a study conducted in Germany has found a discrepancy between objective and subjective measures of quality. According to the study, the image begins to look abnormal to radiologists past a certain level of objective improvement even when such measures as noise reduction suggest that the quality is continuing to improve. As a result, there may be a limit to the practical applications of iterative reconstruction even as this approach becomes a routine tool for image quality enhancement. According to the data, the images were judged subjectively by radiologists as being of best quality when a medium level of iterative reconstruction was performed.
