RSNA 2011: Rapid technological innovations challenge radiologists to keep pace
The acquisition of new information in the field of radiology, like essentially any other scientific discipline, is progressive, but the speed of that acquisition has been accelerating over several decades. One academic radiologist has estimated that the body of information in diagnostic and interventional radiology may have doubled over the last five years. This is placing enormous pressure on practicing clinicians to identify methods of keeping abreast. Importantly, the advances not only include improvements in technology or a better understanding of the relative value of different imaging tools, but changes in the goals and underlying philosophy that guide therapy. Recently, substantially more attention has been devoted to reducing the radiation dose while preserving or even improving on the quality of the images obtained. In an interview with a seasoned observer of the progress in radiology over the last several decades, the challenges of following the evolution in medicine are discussed.
