RSNA 2011: CT angiography moving into new applications even as it becomes safer

During a keynote address during the opening session, an expert in CT angiography explained that this technology has come of age in the management of vascular disease. However, he also explained why the applications of this technology are likely to expand substantially over the next five years. While he considers this form of imaging the standard of care for diagnosing a variety of problems in diverse arterial and venous beds, he expects it to have a critical role in the growing area of transcatheter aortic valve transplant, in the diagnosis of culprit lesions producing ischemia, and in assessing how atherosclerotic lesions affect perfusion to organs. At the same time, he pointed out the progress that has been made in reducing radiation exposures, predicting that all CT angiography will eventually be performed at doses < 1 mSv.
