Insights from the National Lung Screening Trial (UPDATED with new trial data Nov 2011)
Should low-dose helical CT now be the method of choice for lung cancer screening? In November 2010 the USA’s National Cancer Institute (NCI) released early findings from the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) showing that screening with low-dose helical CT was associated with a significant mortality benefit compared with chest X-ray screening, in older current and former heavy smokers. Overall, there were 20% fewer lung cancer deaths in the population screened using CT than in the population screened using X-ray.
