The new Economist.com online debate has begun on whether we should all be taking more personal responsibility for what we eat. The debate will be live for 10 days, closing this Friday, December 18th.
The MotionIn this Philips-sponsored debate, two healthcare opinion leaders are arguing for and against this motion (in an opening, rebuttal, and conclusion format): governments should play a stronger role in guiding food and nutrition choices.
The DebatersThe esteemed Kelly D. Brownell, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Epidemiology, and Public Health, and Director, Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, Yale University is defending the motion, while Melanie Leech, Director General of the Food and Drink Federation is arguing against it.
Opening and rebuttal comments have been made, with proposer Prof. Brownell stating that “Local, national, and global governing authorities must take bold and innovative action to avoid catastrophic health consequences, political upheaval, and political and financial instability around the globe.”
On the opposing side, Melanie Leech commented that the food and drink industry shares society's concerns about the health of the nation, particularly rising obesity levels, and it is committed to playing a positive role. She added: “In fact, the industry would argue that it has shown real leadership on this particular pillar of public policy for many years.”
Erik de Heus, CEO of Philips New Wellness Solutions is providing the Philips perspective. He has answered questions about who has ultimate responsibility for healthy behavior and what can be done to help people make better choices. He also shares his perspective on what global companies like Philips can do to help be a part of the solution, and how innovative technology can help empower people to live healthier lives.
